Nature

Nature is called Matter in scientific language. Prakrati or Mahamaya in Vedic texts. The nature is as vast as the Cosmos. It’s the projected power or the desire of the Lord.  This apparent universe is part of the same nature.   It has it’s own rules, regulations and governing principles for all beings, sentient and insentient. It appears to be very diverse in appearance, the magnitude of which cannot be comprehended by a human mind. It’s all-powerful; all beings that manifest are subject to its control.   The laws of nature are immutable.   All beings according to the type of body and expected deed have been allotted intelligence, age, and duty.

The scriptures reveal that there are 84,00,000 yonis (species) of sentient beings in the universe. (Species should not be understood as group of particular beings as generally understood as there is no equivalent to the word yoni.)  For example: - Fish is one species. Tuna, Shark, Piranhas, Trout etc. fall under one category Fish.    One may be an Eskimo or a Native aborigine one may speak different languages pray to seemingly different Gods but all are human beings.

There are three qualities or energies in this universe, namely Rajas, Sattva                  and Tamas.  Once the Lord disturbs these energies, coupled with Cosmic Intelligence and time, plus creation of subtle elements Ether, Air, Water, Fire and Earth, the nature as we see comes into being. Briefly Rajas is the energy of motion, Sattva harmony and Tamas retardation.  The entire universe and created beings are composed of these three energies/ qualities. All conceivable substances are composed of these energies of varying proportions and emit the similar energies in different ways depending upon the substance in which they manifest and the substance with which this manifestation interacts. Unless one is exposed to this knowledge in greater detail it is difficult to understand it precisely.   Even some students who have been learning Vedanta for some time do not easily understand this.    The knowledge of nature dwells after prolonged meditations under a Vedanta guru.

The nature is seemingly very systematic and adheres to the dictums of its controller. The Sun always rises in the East. The Seasons come and go as scheduled.  Birds, insect, animals behave in a particular pattern peculiar to each one of them. Also the nature is constantly on the move. We always feel we are resting, but the earth is rotating around its axis. Similarly other planets and galaxies are constantly on the move.  Movement from place A to B causes change of place in terms of time and distance. Also motions in minds and bodies result in release and friction between energies, thereby causing modification both to the body and mind.  We see change in seasons, environment, thinking and so on. It is so vast and un-comprehendible in its totality.  In nature every thing co-exists as timed and tuned by the Creator. A tiger sleeps near the herd of deer but kills a deer when hungry. Big fish eats the small one. Each being has different habits and desires and behaves in a typical pattern. It is so dissimilar and seemingly non-conforming, yet it is moving on a definite course as designed by the Creator.   No one can question or know why a thing was created or is having particular characteristics.    One has to live in the body, place and environment as slotted.

The celestial government exists and controls the entire cosmos. We cannot observe this phenomenon with our eyes but if one is very observant one realizes its existence. Yogis with the divine eye can perceive this government.   The created beings have a particular design of body. Insects, animals, humans, demi-gods demons etc. have their own shapes and sizes. They have their own characteristics, potencies and powers. As the time changes or moves on, some beings get extinct, some new crop up. Everything is subject to birth, growth, decay and death. Every body performs action and is bound by the deed it performs, hence is called Karma Loka (Field of action). All actions mental and physical have an effect immediate, or later. When we interact in this world with any type of sentient or insentient being a reaction is produced.  We all understand Newton’s third law that to an action there is equal and opposite reaction. Similarly, every cause produces an effect. There can be no effect without a cause.
